Universal Design

Universal Design addresses the needs of multi-generational households, making it safe and accessible for everyone. Your kitchen can be set up using Universal Design, Adaptable Design, (easily modified for a disabled person) or Accessible Design (Barrier-free which complies with the guidelines and regulations from the American National Standards Institute's regulation A117.1--design requirements for wheelchair bound persons).

Incorporating Universal Design can consist of:
· varying counter heights
· compacting work triangle to reduce steps
· utilizing the optimal access range (knee-high to shoulder)
· installing cabinet accessories and hardware that are easy to manipulate
· installing wrist blade style faucets that don't require grabbing or twisting
· purchasing a side by side refrigerator/freezer or undercounter refrigeration units
· digital and large number displays
· contrasting edge treatments

Accessible Design includes creating designs and floorplans for wheelchair access. This includes:
· door and aisle widths
· an adequate turning radiuses and knee clearances
· appropriate height of sink, range, mixing counter, shelves
· an induction cooktop is often the best choice with an anti-fogging mirror installed above
· cabinet accessories and hardware to allow for easy access
· contrasting edge treatments
· 9" deep toekicks
· tambour (roll-top) doors for base cabinets
· door hinges that open to 180°
· easy accessible light switches, electric outlets, wall-mounted telephones and dispensers
