Ceramic
Tile
If
you love color, pattern, and texture--add ceramic tiles to your kitchen
as a countertop or a backsplash. Ceramic tiles come in a variety of sizes
and shapes, which can be easily cut with the right tools. Tile prices
ranges from reasonable to outrageous. Installing a ceramic countertop
is labor intensive and therefore is more costly to install than other
countertop materials.
Hand painted, imported, and antique versions can be costly, but when combined
(in a small quantity) with inexpensive standard tiles, you can create
an affordable and custom look. To define your style you may also want
to use bullnose tiles, ropes and accent strips. In addition, new stick
on decals make plain tiles come alive and can be easily removed and changed
with the assistance of a heat gun.
When unglazed, tiles have a matte look and need to be sealed when used
near water. When tiles are glazed, they are available in either a matte
or highly polished sheen. The surface of a glazed tile is impervious to
water and resistant to scratches, burns, and stains. While tiles are usually
quite durable, there are some tiles that are less durable than others.
So, if you have a question about its durability, don't be afraid to take
home a sample and put it to the test--scrape some pots over the surface,
spill grape juice on it, and wipe it off to see how it reacts.
Grout can be tinted to contrast with or match the tile, but remember the
lighter the color--the more it shows dirt. If left unsealed, grout will
harbor bacteria and allow water to seep through the tiles, which will
ultimately break down the grout and damage the material underneath. Professionals
use an acrylic or epoxy grout to help reduce stains. Maintaining the grout
and cleaning the countertop regularly with a non-abrasive antibacterial
cleanser will extend the life of your countertop. For more information
