Dryers

Dryers have an energy efficient option that is becoming more common and more affordable--an internal humidity sensor in the dryer cavity that turns the unit off when clothes are dry. This option not only saves energy but wear and tear because clothes are not being "over dried. Many dryer units have doors with hinges that can be moved from left to right to accommodate your floor plan.

Review the exhaust options for your dryer, as there are both gas models (which must be vented to the outside) and electric models (which can be set up as vented or ventless). If you are going to vent your dryer, design your duct to be as short and straight as possible--90° elbows may attract lint build-up and thus may present a fire hazard. Rigid and flexible metal ducts are the best choices as they retain their shape--flexible plastic and foil ducts may droop and pinch, causing a build-up of lint. If you are using an electric dryer, you can also install a quick/convert flap that will allow you redirect your warm dryer air back into the house during cold weather.
