PRODUCT OVERVIEW
There are many alternatives to natural granite and marble on the market
today. There are laminates, the most famous being offered by Formica, and
solid surface materials, the most notable being DuPont's Corian products.
Perhaps the biggest reason for the emergence of these alternative surfacing
materials is that natural granite and marble are quite costly. Now the gap
between these two extremes has been bridged with ThinStone. A revolutionary
new natural stone product, ThinStone retains its elegance and beauty and
does so with superior product performance. Available in both granite and
marble (0.3" to 0.67" thick), ThinStone is created when the natural stone
is reinforced with an epoxy system through a chemical bonding process. The
process enhances other physical characteristics, making it extremely flexible
with added durability--three times thinner and seven times stronger than
traditional granite and marble, and highly resistant to de-laminating. ThinStone
products are sold in the U.S. and Canada under the brand names, TechnoStone
and TechnoMarble (distributed
by Buystone, Inc.). TechnoStone granite is available in six standard colors,
slab sizes up to 5' X 10' (1500mm x 3000mm), and thicknesses from 1/4" to
7/8" (6mm to 22mm). TechnoMarble is available in four standard colors and
in the same sizes and thicknesses as above. These products also require
less natural stone per square foot vs. traditional stone so it makes it
an environmentally friendly product.
APPLICATIONS
ThinStone's features and benefits make it a most attractive alternative
for kitchen countertops, bar tops, flooring, fireplace surrounds, interior
and exterior wall-cladding, and tub and shower surrounds. It can be used
in conjunction with drop-in and undermount sinks. The ¾" ThinStone has superior
load-bearing capacity and is often used as part of a raised floor system
that stands out for its exceptional stability and its sound-deadening, anti-static,
and fire resistant qualities.
INSTALLATION
The light weight of ThinStone (from 3.7 lbs. / sq. ft. to 7.2 lbs. /
sq. ft.) in conjunction with its improved physical characteristics make
it easier to handle, fabricate, transport and install. While it is recommended
to work with a local stone fabricator and contractor to do the cutting,
polishing, and installation, a skilled DIY'er with the proper tools can
handle working with this product.
COST
The ease of working with ThinStone subsequently reduces the overall cost
to the homeowner by some 30% when compared to traditional granite and marble
whose fragility and sheer weight of (22 lbs. / sq. ft. maximum weight) make
them much more difficult to handle, fabricate and transport. Thus, for the
end consumer, traditional granite or marble adds additional costs that have
nothing to do with the value of the stone in the first place.
MAINTENANCE
General maintenance will follow the same rules for granite and marble
stone surfaces. (For additional maintenance tips and links see Natural
Stone in our Countertops
section.)
